Primum Familiae Vini (PFV), an association of twelve of the world’s most historic winemaking families, is pleased to announce that Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi, a Japanese company specializing in lacquer refining for four generations, has been awarded the prestigious PFV Prize 2025, worth €100,000. This award recognizes independent family businesses that stand out for their artisanal excellence, sustainability and intergenerational continuity.

On April 10, PFV members gathered in Japan for an extraordinary occasion: the official PFV Award 2025 ceremony. In the prestigious setting of the Tsutsumi workshop and a revered temple, they paid tribute to a family business whose commitment to excellence, sustainability and the transmission of craftsmanship from generation to generation deeply reflects PFV’s values.

Founded in 1909, Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi specializes in the refinement of natural Japanese lacquer, a centuries-old art that combines tradition and innovation. Despite a 90% decline in demand for lacquer over the past four decades, the Tsutsumi family has maintained its commitment to quality, developing UV-resistant lacquers and playing a key role in preserving Japan's cultural heritage. Today, the company refines a significant portion of Japanese lacquer, which is used in the restoration of national treasures such as the Nikko Toshogu Shrine.

An award rooted in FAMILY values and EXCELLENCE
Awarded biennially, the PFV Award recognizes a family business that embodies excellence, sustainability and the transmission of knowledge between generations. The twelve PFV families strongly believe in the importance of supporting family businesses that, like theirs, preserve tradition while innovating for the future.

A RECOGNITION FOR EXCELLENCE
Previous winners of the PFV Prize include Maison Bernard, the oldest violin-making workshop in Europe, and Brun de Vian-Tiran, a French textile company specializing in the production of fine fabrics. This year, Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi joins this prestigious list, reaffirming the essential role of family businesses in preserving cultural and artisanal heritage.

Created in 2020, the PFV Prize supports exceptional family businesses that share PFV’s commitment to excellence, craftsmanship and sustainability. Awarded biennially, the €100,000 prize recognizes businesses that have maintained their legacy while innovating. Its aim is to highlight the fundamental role of family businesses in the economy and in cultural and artisanal preservation.

Previous winners:

• 2021: MAISON BERNARD (Belgium) - The oldest violin making workshop in Europe, renowned for its extraordinary craftsmanship and the restoration of priceless instruments.

• 2023: BRUN DE VIAN TIRAN (France) - An eight-generation textile manufacturer that has preserved the tradition of producing noble fabrics by combining heritage and sustainability.
