These words by Draghi perfectly capture the situation in which Europe finds itself at the moment and the path it must take. After all, the aggression and humiliation that Europeans are suffering from the Trump Administration leave no room for doubt and conjecture. A two-pronged attack is underway: on European security , which has become only a burden for Washington, which has no problem dividing up pieces of our continent with Putin, starting with Ukraine; and on democracy , which is also considered an obstacle to the project of a new autocratic and populist international.
For Europe, the darkest hour has returned; and this time there are no saviors to call for help. Europe can only count on itself and must choose whether to remain inert and thus be destroyed, or to react; but in Europe , no one has the power to react . The European institutions do not have it, which remain hostage to national governments, but neither do the latter, although they maintain sovereignty, because, individually, they are too weak.
If this moment of mortal danger is not used by Europe as an opportunity to make the leap to strengthen its political integration, the real risk is that the European Union will shatter . In the world of great autocratic imperial powers, there is no other way to save democracy and freedom than to oppose the political weight of a large democratic and federal state. It is first and foremost up to the European governments most aware of the value of European unity and of what is at stake in Ukraine to begin to build it, taking the first steps immediately, starting from the urgency of ensuring the security of their citizens and partners.
We must first go beyond the framework of 27 in which we are making too little and too slowly, and begin to build among the willing not so much sectoral projects (which experience has shown are not sufficient), but rather a coherent unitary strategy to guarantee internal and external security, and to mobilize the huge financial resources needed .
Building an effective autonomous defense with which Europeans can guarantee security for themselves and Ukraine takes time; but the political will to do so can be manifested immediately , with concrete interventions on the crucial issues of the budget, the abolition of the veto, the initiative of a group of countries in the military field, in order to change the perception of the EU both externally and internally.
On the third anniversary of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, let Europeans prove that they are worthy of the Resistance from which their common home was born and that they know how to fight to save freedom, democracy, the rule of law in Ukraine, in Europe, in the world.
