Theme: “The Role of Academia in Protecting Freedom of Expression as a Driver for Other Human Rights”

Hope in a changing Somalia Teachers, Educators and Academic Society Attitude by Transforming their knowledge habituality.

On the last World Press Freedom Day, the Federation of Somalia Universities (FESU) reaffirme the need to defend and promote a free, independent, pluralistic press that provides free, reliable, quality information. FESU condemns the all forms growing violence against journalists and other massive disinformation campaigns against free media in across Somalia.

May 3rd, is World Press Freedom Day. This year we mark the 30th year of this UN International Day. This year’s theme as defined by UNESCO is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights”. Press freedom and reliable information globally is everyone’s concern and has impact on all the other human rights.

The international community faces multiple crises; conflicts and violence, persistent socio-economic inequalities driving migration, environmental crises and challenges to the health and wellbeing of people all around the world, while disinformation and misinformation online and offline proliferate with serious impact on the institutions underpinning democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

The right to freedom of expression, enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is a prerequisite and a driver to the enjoyment of all other human rights. FESU in cooperation with SOMESHA and IFAJ as well as other media units is planning an occasion to organize zoom event that spotlight thelink between press freedom, freedom of expression and other rights on Wednesday July 26, 2023.

On the 30th anniversary of these importantlandmarkevents, and as weventureintothe last decade for the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030, World Press Freedom Day 2023 provides an opportunity to emphasize the role of freedom of expression and media freedom as enablers of all other human rights, and to underscore the indivisible, interdependent and interrelated nature of all human rights.

The World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference. Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day.

As part of UNESCO partners from the media, academia, and civil society and are invited to organize events in around the world centered on this year’s theme, we are happy to discuss “ARDAY FILM DRAMA” prepared by Bile Tv and met hate, restrictions and public notes from part of academic society in order to stop the ongoing programs for the “Arday Film”.
