0.ENOPRESS WINE SPECIAL

VURGADÀ I.G.P. CALABRIA ROSSO 2021

Bottiglie prodotte: 20.000.

All’esame visivo

VESCOVADO I.G.P. CALABRIA BIANCO 2022

Bottiglie prodotte: 15.000.

ENGLISH VERSION

The Santa Venere organic farm extends for about 150 hectares on the hills of the ancient land of Cirò, a small town in Calabria in the province of Crotone with very ancient origins. This territory, with its flat countryside towards the sea and rolling hills, is considered highly prized for the cultivation of vines and olive trees.

The company, which takes its name from the stream of the same name that runs through the property, has belonged to the Scala family since 1600. In ancient times there was only the family house, with an adjoining ancient mill made of heavy stone wheels (of which there are still jealously guarded the remains). It is currently led by the brothers Giuseppe and Francesco who have made large investments especially in the cellar, equipping it with the most modern and technological equipment supported first by Riccardo Cotarella and then by Massimo Bartolini.

Santa Venere is a certified organic company and has chosen from the outset to follow a rigorously "natural" cultivation method: no synthetic chemicals are used, but only natural substances. This enhances the natural resources of the land, in full respect of the characteristics of the soil and biodiversity, and allows to obtain high quality products.

The Valoritalia certification imprinted on every single bottle demonstrates the respect and success of the continuous commitment to maintaining this organic cultivation system of which the company is a pioneer in Calabria.

The owned vineyards extend for 30 hectares at an altitude of 500 metres. from the Ionian Sea, a land exposed to the sun and the winds, and are raised with the spurred cordon system, located in the places called: Volta Grande, Vurgadà, Piana di Coletta, Sant'Angelo, Speziale.

Right from the start, the idea has always been to focus on native vines to enhance one's land, a modern and effective turning point also applied to the image of the products. All with the increasingly focused aim of focusing on the most expressive native varieties of the place. In fact, among the vines relaunched by the Cellar, we find Guardavalle and black Marsigliana .

The annual production of the winery is close to 218,000 bottles, half of which are exported abroad. The countries where Santa Venere wines are marketed are: Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Romania, Ireland, England, Sweden, Russia, America, North Korea, Canada, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Finland, Countries Low.

For 2023, the planting of 5 new hectares of vineyards on land already owned is planned, always focusing on the native vines that Santa Venere already enhances, namely Guardavalle, Zibibbo and Marsigliana Nera.

We had the opportunity and the pleasure of tasting two of the five wines that the Calabrian winery's Crù line offers. The two IGP Calabria Vurgadà, which takes its name from an enchanting place, enriched by a natural lake where the cattle went to cool off and the persuasive Vescovado, a yellow wine of great class and personality obtained from a grape variety almost unknown to most, such as Guardavalle.

VURGADÀ IGP CALABRIA RED 2021

Bottles produced: 20,000. Price to the public (wine shop): €16.00.

Obtained from Nerello Cappuccio (95%) and Nerello Cappuccio withered (5%) organically grown, it is aged for 6 months in oak barriques and 6 months in the bottle.
Upon visual examination it is clear, with a consistent ruby red color with purple reflections.

In this phase you can still feel all its youth, the little wood needs to integrate with a nice fruit that recalls sour cherry, marasca cherry, black cherry, then the aromatic spectrum turns towards mentholated sensations, eucalyptus, pepper, vanilla and elegant notes of tobacco and cloves.

On the palate it hides the alcoholic strength well thanks to a full and ripe pulp at the right point, even here there is still a woody trace, but it is easy to understand that it is only a sin of youth. The drink is young and perky, pleasant, the closing is brackish and dry. In short, a red that goes well with food and above all makes the bottle finish in a flash.

VESCOVADO IGP CALABRIA WHITE 2022

Bottles produced: 15,000. Price to the public (wine shop): €15.00.

Refines 5 months in steel tanks and 2 months in bottle.

Yellow wine of great class and personality, Vescovado is obtained from the native Guardavalle vine cultivated with the dictates of organic farming and located on the Voltagrande estate in Cirò (Crotone), a few steps from the sea.

Guardavalle is particularly widespread on the Ionian side of the province of Reggio Calabria and in the wine areas of Kalipera and Locride. There is no certain historical information on the vine, we only know that it has been present in Calabria since the time of the Magna Graecia colonies.

The Vescovado is part of the ambitious project "Autochthonous of Calabria", conceived and promoted by Santa Venere in 2010, which every year involves the launch of a new product obtained from native vines. A yellow wine that thrilled me, above all for its strong primary aroma that makes it almost resemble a Gewurztraminer, a Malvasia, or the Apulian Minutolo. A real and pleasant surprise that confirms the great and infinite potential of Calabrian ampelography, which finally in recent times is expressing itself at excellent levels thanks to the rediscovery of unknown varietal species.

Color characterized by a strong straw yellow, almost golden, with evident bright flashes at the edges. The nose is intense, it is expressed with explosive aromas that attack the nostrils with a harmonious collusion between exotic fruit, such as lychee, papaya and mango and the local one of hazelnuts, almonds, bergamot and golden apple. To these are added the persuasive floral notes of hawthorn and elderberry in the finish.

In the mouth it is sapid, almost salty (the proximity to the sea is perceived), the sip confirms all the starting aromatic register, characterized by an irrepressible, fresh, fruity and floral gustatory tension. It opens beautifully in the center of the mouth and releases all its intensity and pleasantness, long in the finish. A wine to be classified as excellent which really amazed me with its freshness, integrity, intensity and pleasantness of drinking, making me reconfirm once again that Calabria is a great land for great wines.
