The big news story this week was the tension between the US and China, which reached new highs when Xi Jinping named America as the force behind the “containment, encirclement and suppression” of China. China’s foreign minister subsequently warned of a clash with the US unless Washington ceased its attempts to contain Beijing.

The FT then revealed that Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen convinced US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to meet in California rather than Taipei to avoid an aggressive Chinese military response. In an excellent column, US editor Edward Luce argues that loose talk of a US-China conflict is no longer far-fetched.
