Uve impiegate: Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) 80%, Canaiolo Nero 20%. Bottiglie prodotte: 18/ 20.000
Colore rosso rubino vivace.

Uve impiegate: Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) 80%, Canaiolo Nero 10%, Colorino e Mammolo 10%. Bottiglie prodotte: 40/50.000 circa.
Molto buono.

ENGLISH VERSION
CONTUCCI WINERY: 1000 YEARS OF HISTORY AND PASSION FOR NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO
It is difficult not to be conquered by an estate that has been producing wine since the Renaissance, which was among the first producers of "noble wine" and which still today uses traditional methods to create wines of excellence, which have received numerous awards and accolades. After all, the origins of the Contucci family are tied in a tight knot to those of the city of Montepulciano, just as the wines it produces consistently represent this territory, showing typicality, elegance and authenticity, just like the rampant unicorn in the blue field of the family’s coat of arms wants to symbolize.
The contribution of the Contucci family to making "a wine obtained with noble grapes destined for the tables of nobles" famous throughout the world has been documented since 1773. And it is therefore rightly numbered among the "putative fathers" of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
The premises where the cellar is located today, in the enchanting Piazza Grande of Montepulciano, have been owned by the family since 1646; originally the palace had been built for Cardinal Dal Monte by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, then it passed to the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinando I, and finally to the Contucci family. Before becoming a cellar, the building was part of the guardhouse of the narrowest guard wall of Montepulciano.
There are 170 hectares of property, 21 of which are planted with vineyards, located in one of the best production areas at an altitude between 280 and 450 meters. The soils are mainly of Pliocene origin, with the presence of clay and sand. The vines made up exclusively of native vines (Prugnolo Gentile, Canaiolo Nero, Mammolo, Colorino, Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia del Chianti and Grechetto) are trained with spurred cordon, with great respect for the environment and the land, and have a density of about 3300/4000 plants per hectare, with limited yields (less than 55q/ha) which allow for excellent quality grapes to be obtained.
The production of the Contucci winery reaches a maximum of 100,000 bottles per year, it is a medium/small cellar that cannot expand that much due to the historic premises.
Exports have become increasingly important in recent years: emerging markets have joined Japan, the United States, Austria and Germany. Furthermore, since Andrea Contucci, the globetrotter of the company who personally delivers the wines to a multitude of wine bars and restaurants throughout the beautiful country, has taken care of it, marketing has developed in Italian restaurants and wine bars. They have a strong presence in Milan and Rome, in Versilia, in Florence and around Montepulciano, between Valdorcia and Valdichiana.
The peculiarity of their cellar is that of marketing the wines one year later than the two years foreseen by the disciplinary, a choice that is a sign of originality and refinement. This is because they only use historical vines, they do not use Cabernet and Merlot which need less refinement than Sangiovese and Prugnolo Gentile.
Contucci wines communicate authenticity, a feeling of purity, free from frills and superstructures, they have been able to proudly resist, over time, the accommodations, the fashions, the avant-garde temptations aimed at the search for stylistic approaches more oriented towards the market and the taste of mass.
Enopress had the extreme pleasure of being able to taste these three samples of the estate and these are our impressions.
RED OF MONTEPULCIANO DOC 2020
Grapes used: Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) 80%, Canaiolo Nero 20%. Bottles produced: 18/20.000
Aging in oak barrels (French) from 10 to 25 Hl, where it remains for 8 months. Bottle refinement: 2/3 months before release.
Lively ruby red colour. The nose has a vinous and intense aroma, where the floral notes of violet and hibiscus prevail together with the fruity ones of fresh cherry, black currant, raspberry, plum and resins.
Flowing and balanced wine. It expands well on the palate remaining taut and juicy, immediate, with intense but perfectly incorporated tannins and the acidity that supports the persuasive and gentle finish lying between currant and raspberry, aromatic herbs and some bloody hints.
NOBLE WINE OF MONTEPULCIANO DOCG 2018
Grapes used: Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) 80%, Canaiolo Nero 10%, Colorino and Mammolo 10%. Bottles produced: approximately 40/50.000.
Aging in oak barrels (French and Slavonian) from 8 to 25 Hl, where it remains for 24 months. Bottle refinement: 6/8 months before marketing.
The color is deep ruby red with garnet reflections. On the attack, the aromas of violet and red currant open up a slightly spicy bouquet of Mediterranean scrub from which aromas of black cherry and black cherry are released with a slight vein of ginger.
Rigorous and fascinating for elegant composure, it has a loose and salty plot that does not allow anything to fuss with effect. The attack on the palate is soft, rich in cherry and black cherry, confirming the violet and opening to a harmonious and delicious, full, captivating taste. The acidity is well balanced, the tannins are strong but tamed, salivating sapidity and balsamic references that give ample scope to the soft and refined finish with a good cherry flavor. Very good.

Dark red color with evident bluish streaks. Captivating bouquet of dried violets, sour cherries and mulberry blackberries, enriched by hints of undergrowth and medicinal herbs. The tertiary then emerges, with spicy tones of black tea, leather, cloves, licorice and blond tobacco, which make it extremely elegant.
