The beginning of 2026 has only added new global challenges to those already present: the forced overthrow of Maduro in Venezuela and the heavy repression of popular protests in Iran . We have therefore turned our attention to these two countries and their dramatic economic and social situations.

Given the current international climate, the imminent expiration of the New Start Treaty for the Limitation of Strategic Nuclear Weapons, signed in Prague in 2010, the last legal and diplomatic instrument that has so far regulated the nuclear arms race, could also raise some concerns.

To complete this worrying geopolitical review, we also take stock of the problems of tiny Mali and its capital Bamako, besieged for months by jihadist militias.

On an economic/financial note, we introduce the new chairman of the Federal Reserve , Kevin Warsh, who took over from Jerome Powell a few days ago, and analyze possible developments in the currency market in the new year.

In conclusion, some reflections on the boom in artificial intelligence and the state of health of big tech, also in light of China's progress and its different approach in this field.
