SAN CLEMENTE TREBBIANO D’ABRUZZO DOC 2023

SAN CLEMENTE: CANTINA ZACCAGNINI'S SINGLE VINEYARDS DEDICATED TO TWO GREAT ABRUZZO NATIVES
Initially family-run, it is now an international reality with over 300 hectares of vineyards, cared for and controlled in every phase of the production and sale of wines in every part of the world, with the United States being the market par excellence.
We had the opportunity to taste two labels from indigenous varieties that tell the story of the peak of its production: the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC Riserva Terre di Casauria and the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC .
Two wines that are not only the result of a consolidated winemaking tradition, but also a celebration of the richness of the terroirs of Abruzzo , which belong to the Cru San Clemente line, dedicated and inspired by the Benedictine Abbey of San Clemente, among the most beautiful medieval monuments of Abruzzo.
THE BENEDICTINE ABBEY OF SAN CLEMENTE A CASAURIA
Built along the ancient route of the Via Claudio-Valeria. The monumental complex, begun to be built in 871, housed the relics of the fourth Pontiff, Pope Clement I, later stolen by the French and represented on the labels. The choice of the site, close to the Pescara River, between the Duchy of Spoleto to the North and the Duchy of Benevento to the South, in a favorable position for the control of an area that will be subjected to the process of castles starting from the second half of the 10th century, is linked to strategic and political-military issues.
THE SAN CLEMENTE VINEYARD
This area benefits from a unique microclimate thanks to its position, surrounded and protected by the Maiella, Gran Sasso and Morrone mountains . The vineyards, located a short distance from the abbey, are immersed in an environment rich in history and culture. This bond with the territory is a fundamental element for the identity of Zaccagnini wines , which tell the story of the region's cultural and winemaking heritage . To further enhance this aspect, the San Clemente line has seen an elegant restyling of the labels that has highlighted the decorative elements of the abbey as a symbol of the bond with the territory and the traditions of Abruzzo, giving it further value.
In line with Cantina Zaccagnini's commitment to sustainable agriculture , the vineyard management embraces practices that respect biodiversity : chemical fertilizers are avoided in favor of organic fertilizers and rotations of legumes and brassicas between the rows, to ensure soil aeration and nitrogen supply. In addition, the company uses chitosan, a natural antifungal extracted from shells, to fight parasites in an ecological way.
SAN CLEMENTE MONTEPULCIANO D'ABRUZZO DOC TERRE DI CASAURIA RESERVE 2019
This Montepulciano ages for 24 months, of which a minimum of 9 in oak vats. After bottling, further refinement in the bottle for a minimum of 6 months.
In the glass it shows a deep red color with purple reflections. The aromatic spectrum is broad, with immediate floral scents of rose and fruity aromas of berries (especially blueberries and currants), followed by spicy aromas of licorice, vanilla and white pepper, with soft balsamic notes of menthol and mineral notes of graphite on the finish.
On the palate the fruit dominates the scene and offers a juicy and persuasive sip, decidedly material and voluminous. In the mouth it expresses itself with power rather than finesse, but the tannin is pleasant, perfectly smooth. On the finish, cocoa tones and hints of tobacco emerge. A great wine for aging.
SAN CLEMENTE TREBBIANO D'ABRUZZO DOC 2023
The Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, also coming from the San Clemente vineyard, follows a refinement process in non-toasted barriques for approximately 3 months.
The wine has an intense straw yellow color and golden reflections. The bouquet is wide and elegantly unfolds between alluring and heterogeneous fruity aromas of yellow peach, apricot, white melon, clementine and almond and the subsequent floral and vegetal hints of jasmine, hawthorn, acacia, sage and thyme and the marked spicy nuances of saffron, cloves and cinnamon that complete the aromatic register.
A sip penetrates the mouth that is immediately appreciated for the excellent pleasantness of drinking and which then reveals itself to be fluid, immediate, elegant, fresh, savoury, round, juicy and made enjoyablely complex by the excellent dosage of wood. It shows off a creamy and dynamic development that gives excellent keeping quality and a persistent and satisfying final thrust. An excellent yellow wine that still has great potential for growth ahead of it.
