0.ENOPRESS WINE SPECIAL

 ___________________________________

 0.Sasseo APERITIF

SALENTO PRIMITIVO IGT “SASSEO” 2020

ENGLISH VERSION

THE WINES OF MASSERIA ALTEMURA BETWEEN THE LIGHT OF SALENTO AND THE BREEZE OF THE TWO SEAS

On one side the Ionian Sea, on the other the Adriatic, in between the silvery foliage of the olive trees that embrace a 17th century farmhouse and the green of the rows of Primitivo di Manduria, Fiano, Negroamaro and Aglianico.

A contrast of colors that outlines the Salento landscape of Torre Santa Susanna and Oria, in Brindisi Puglia, where Masseria Altemura is located, owned by Zonin 1821 who created here, in the game of contrast, a contemporary cellar, designed according to the principles of bio-architecture.

The Zonin family, an important Venetian production company, saw in this land, in Masseria Altemura in particular, the potential project of contributing to the rebirth of Apulian viticulture.

Purchased in 2000, since then the Masseria has been the subject of profound design work, both as regards the buildings and the vineyards, presenting itself today as a perfectly harmonized structure in the environment and in the original architecture.

Particular attention has been paid to the recovery of two historically significant buildings for the area: the massive tower, which will be transformed into a prestigious residence for guests of the estate, and a private chapel with frescoes dating back to the 16th century.

The total hectares of the estate are over 270, of which 130 are vineyards and 40 are olive groves. The vines are perfectly exposed to the sun, and the particular climate, in which windy and saline currents cross between the Ionian and Adriatic seas, together with the effect of the white stone that emerges from the ground reflecting the sun's rays, contributes to the particular ripening of the grapes.

Among the rows various white and red grape varieties are grown, such as Primitivo, Negroamaro, Fiano, Aglianico and Falanghina, which have their roots in a subsoil of calcareous origin. On the land where ancient sapling vineyards once grew and where the grapes ripened day after day pampered by the sun and breezes, new rows of the best native varieties have been planted according to a fully eco-sustainable philosophy. The vines are flanked in perfect geometry by 40 hectares of centuries-old olive trees which sink their roots into the red earth mixed with white blocks of limestone origin and which still continue to bear fruit and bend their silvery foliage following the wind.

Every year Masseria Altemura produces about 400,000 bottles, which express the great potential of Salento even beyond the borders of the peninsula, with territorial wines and at the same time endowed with a modern style.

AltemuraSasseo and Zìnzula are just some of the labels of the line of "Cru" with a clear Mediterranean style, in which sun, wind and sea blend in a single sip and which Enopress had the opportunity to taste.

ALTEMURA PRIMITIVO DI MANDURIA DOC 2019

It is the iconic wine of Masseria Altemura. Its name speaks of that search for proportion, which is typical of Apulian art, between horizontal lines and vertical lines, between the volume of the walls of the Masseria and the momentum of the Aragonese Tower. A sophisticated interpretation of Primitivo di Manduria, Altemura comes from a 5-hectare vineyard, immersed in the estate and characterized by a soil rich in white limestone rocks.

Primitivo grapes 100%. It matures for 14 months in French oak tonneaux and immediately after it refines in glass for another 6. The alcohol content is fourteen and a half degrees.

You have to be very careful when talking about Mandurian Primitivo, because you can make the mistake of labeling it as a full-bodied, robust, concentrated, super alcoholic wine with little acidity. But fortunately this cliché does not suit all Primitivos and least of all Altemura, which is already ruby red in the glass, with bright orange reflections at the edges.

The 2019 version opens with intense aromas of plum, small black fruits such as blueberry, blackberry and currant then intertwined with floral essences of elderberry and violet and then again spicy notes of licorice, coffee, tobacco, menthol and a hint of white pepper that completes the olfactory picture.

The impact of the wine in the mouth is captivating. The wine begins soft and enveloping to continue with sweet and savory accents, up to a dense finish and still with balsamic tones. The tannic texture is well woven and already smooth and gives pleasantness. The finish is persistent and long and closes on light notes of cocoa. Ultimately it is a stylistically modern and drinkable Primitivo, very far from the collective imagination of a heavy and hard wine.

SALENTO PRIMITIVO IGT “SASSEO” 2020

Born from the desire to create a Primitivo with a strong personality, Sasseo is today one of the most successful Apulian wines on the international scene. As its name suggests, it is the direct expression of a land in which the calcareous "stone" emerges from the red Salento earth, to become a mirror of light.

Primitivo grapes 100%. It is obtained from a selection of primitivo grapes grown on an ocher soil and calcareous slabs and harvested when fully ripe (in contrast with the classic early harvest of the primitivo, from which the name also derives). The 2020 version ages for 12 months in large Slavonian barrels and for another 6 in the bottle.

It is a dark purple wine, almost impenetrable. The nose has intensity and complexity: it has intense aromas of plum and sour cherries and black cherries in alcohol and a spiciness capable of oscillating between cinnamon and saffron.

In the mouth, the sip is soft, with articulated and sweet tannins, well expressed, but smoothed by a wise use of the barrel, accompanied by a right acidity. It is a concentrate of class and elegance.

SALENTO ROSATO IGT "ZÌNZULA" 2021

The new Masseria Altemura label is a tribute to the most beautiful of the Salento caves, the Zìnzulusa, known for its zinzuli, stalactite formations that take on soft and bright pink hues in the light of sunset.

Inspired by this exceptional natural spectacle, Zìnzula aims to be one of the new symbols of that Salento of wine that looks to the world. Merit not only of an extraordinarily fine reference that expresses the fresh and fragrant notes of Negroamaro, the iconic Apulian red grape variety, on this occasion vinified in rosé to fully express all its delicacy, but also thanks to a pack that plays on precious and bright details and that configure it as a real design jewel. In fact, the combination of transparent and satin glass creates an original play of light and reflections capable of giving a unique grace and finesse to the slender and sinuous shape of the bottle. Furthermore, the pink glass cap gives a decidedly captivating touch of creativity and elegance.

Negroamaro grapes 100%. It is of a very delicate and delicate pink, tending towards powder, with very slight coppery reflections. The bouquet is pleasantly broad, sophisticated floral hints of dog rose stand out, accompanied by pleasant notes of black cherry and a spiciness reminiscent of pink pepper and ginger with a slight touch of turmeric.

The sip flows pleasantly, giving a crunchy fruit, and closes with a strong minerality that tickles the palate. It is a slender and sinuous rosé on the palate, with a vibrant savory vein born to celebrate the splendor of the Apulian coast.
